HGH: Getting Adequate Sleep Slows Aging
Getting sufficient sleep every night is among the cornerstones of preserving optimal health and wellness. Many experts agree that obtaining 6-8 hours of restful, rejuvenating sleep every night is crucial to maintaining optimal focus, concentration, spirits and energy levels. Sufficient rest also plays an important role in keeping immune function at its peak, and that is an especially essential consideration during cold and flu season.
Getting enough sleep also has a number of other benefits that many people don’t know about, probably the most compelling of which is being able to slow the aging process.
Throughout the day, our physiology is dominated by hormones, which offer the body’s ability to function both mentally and physically. Cortisol is a commonly known stress hormone that circulates at high levels during the day. Its primary function is to help support the energy needs of the body by liberating sugars and fuel into the bloodstream. Additionally, it suppresses immune function to lessen inflammation and blunt the immune response. When it falls to its lowest levels during the night, immune function increases, and that's why most people will spike fevers or feel worse when they're sick at night. All of those symptoms are created by an active immune system.
To counterbalance the immune suppressing outcomes of cortisol production during the day, the body emits another hormone at nighttime called growth hormone.
Human growth hormone is naturally released by our bodies daily. The most important triggers for the release of growth hormone are intense physical exertion, and even more importantly, sleep. When cortisol levels fall at night, our bodies are triggered to release growth hormone. Its role is always to undo the physical stress exerted on our bodies by cortisol and injury sustained from daily activity. We literally heal whenever we sleep. We also know that HGH production significantly declines as we grow older, and it is believed that this decline is amongst the primary contributors to the aging process. Although growth hormone has been synthesized and is available as a prescription, taking it as a hormone replacement is highly controversial and includes the potential risk of some serious side effects.
The best way to ensure that growth hormone levels stay high as you age is to engage in strenuous physical activity every day and to get good sleep every single night. Getting to sleep before midnight is crucial, as this helps to trigger growth hormone release.
Even though prescribed sleep aids improve sleep patterns for many individuals, they do not always create the type of restful, rejuvenating sleep that occurs without drug therapy. Having your body cycle through the various stages of sleep is essential to getting restful sleep. Many prescription sleep aids prevent your body from cycling through those critical stages of sleep.
